§Subtleties
Sie
Sie is the default with strangers over 16, in shops, restaurants, with bosses, officials. With children, friends, family — du/ihr. At work it depends on company culture: IT / startups often use du, banks / bureaucracies — Sie.
Das Du anbieten
"Switching to du" is a significant social ritual. Traditionally offered by the older / senior party: "Wollen wir uns duzen?" A handshake seals the deal, sometimes the symbolic "Brüderschaft trinken".
you (polite/formal)
Person Plural verbunden.
Guten Tag, wie geht es Sie? – Verzeihung: wie geht es Ihnen?
— Hello, how are you?
Können Sie mir bitte helfen?
— Could you please help me?
Sie sind unser Gast.
— You are our guest.
you (polite, plural)
