doch — WBuch

German has three answer tokens because "Ja" is ambiguous after a negative question. The trick is learning to reach for "doch".

Stress flips the meaning. As a modal particle "doch" is unstressed; as an adversative or surprised marker it takes heavy stress.

modal particle (do…, you know, after all)

Modalpartikel im Aussage- oder Aufforderungssatz; appelliert an gemeinsames Wissen, mildert eine Aufforderung zur Einladung, drückt Erstaunen oder leichten Vorwurf aus.

A modal particle in declarative or imperative sentences; it appeals to shared knowledge, softens an imperative into an invitation, and expresses surprise or mild reproach.

but, yet, however

Adversative Konjunktion, die einen Gegensatz oder Widerspruch einleitet; verbindet zwei Aussagen im Sinne von „aber, jedoch, dennoch“.

An adversative conjunction that introduces a contrast or contradiction; it connects two statements in the sense of “but, however, nevertheless”.

☞ More elevated and emphatic than “but”; placed at the beginning of a sentence or between clauses.

Er ist müde, doch er arbeitet weiter.
