multifunctional word: affirmation against a negative, modal particle in requests and surprise, adversative conjunction "but / yet".
bejahende Antwort auf Negativfrage, Modalpartikel, adversative Konjunktion — unübersetzbar, aber unverzichtbar.
Drei Funktionen von doch
ANTWORTPARTIKEL
Ja-doch
The positive answer to a negative question. German packs into one word what other languages spell out with "no, I am / yes, I do".
A: Hast du keinen Hunger? — B: Doch!
— Aren't you hungry? — Yes, I am!
MODALPARTIKEL (REQUEST)
дружеская просьба
Softens a command and turns it into an invitation.
Komm doch mit!
— Come on, join us! / Do come along!
MODALPARTIKEL (REMINDER)
напоминание
Appeals to shared knowledge between speakers.
Das weißt du doch!
— You know this, don't you!
MODALPARTIKEL (SURPRISE)
удивление
Intensifies the emotion.
Das ist doch unglaublich!
— That's unbelievable!
KONJUNKTION (ADVERSATIVE)
противит. союз
Like "aber", but more literary and emphatic.
Er ist müde, doch er arbeitet weiter.
— He is tired, yet he keeps working.
German has three answer tokens because "Ja" is ambiguous after a negative question. The trick is learning to reach for "doch".
§Ja / Nein / Doch — the answer system
Question
Answer
Meaning
„Kommst du?"
(+) Are you coming?
Ja
yes, I am
„Kommst du?"
(+) Are you coming?
Nein
no, I'm not
„Kommst du nicht?"
(–) Aren't you coming?
Doch
yes, I am
„Kommst du nicht?"
(–) Aren't you coming?

Stress flips the meaning. As a modal particle "doch" is unstressed; as an adversative or surprised marker it takes heavy stress.
